Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is one of the most famous and read works in German literature and until today the basis for many literary, artistic, cinematic, and musical works.
Faust is in his study attempting and failing to gain knowledge of nature and the universe by magic means. The dejected Faust contemplates suicide, but is held back by the sounds of the beginning Easter celebrations. Desperate, Faust summons the devil . Mephistopheles appears and offers Faust a contract: he will do Faust's bidding on earth in return for Faust’s soul if Mephisto can get him to be satisfied and to want a moment to last forever.
