16 Horsepower, pioneers of gothic country, will perform in Poland for the first time! David Eugene Edwards’ band will play at Proxima in Warsaw on April 16th.
16 Horsepower formed in the early ’90s and played a major role in the development of genres such as gothic country and gothic Americana, as well as the so-called “Denver Sound”. Combining Appalachian folk, bluegrass, gospel and country with post-punk and a rock sensibility, all enriched by David Eugene Edwards’ faith-rooted lyrics, the band created a sound that is difficult to mistake for anything else. Their 1995 EP first drew attention to their distinctive style, followed a year later by their debut album, “Sackcloth ’n’ Ashes”, which earned the band international acclaim. On subsequent releases, “Low Estate”, “Secret South” and “Folklore”, the latter consisting mostly of interpretations of traditional songs, the trio further developed their own musical language. 16 Horsepower created music that was unmistakably American while at the same time steeped in gothic atmosphere, religious imagery and a sense of unease.
This year, after two decades away, 16 Horsepower returned to the stage, causing quite a stir in the alternative music world. David Eugene Edwards, Pascal Humbert and Jean-Yves Tola will perform in Poland for the first time in April, with the show undoubtedly set to be one of the year’s major events in alternative music.
