Tilda Swinton, Simon Fisher Turner and Wacław Zimpel will take to the stage at Kino Wisła for #BLISS2, an improvised performance dedicated to the memory of Derek Jarman. Against a blue backdrop inspired by the work of Yves Klein, Swinton’s voice will be accompanied by music created live on stage.
Swinton will read texts by Jarman and poetry by writers including Mary Oliver, Charles Bukowski and Wisława Szymborska. The selection and order of the texts, as well as their musical accompaniment, will take shape during the performance. Responding to the words, the sounds and one another, the artists will make each of the two Warsaw evenings a unique experience.
#BLISS2 revisits the performance Bliss, which gave rise to Jarman’s final film, Blue (1993) – a personal reflection on love, loss and life with AIDS. Swinton, who made her film debut in Jarman’s Caravaggio, and Simon Fisher Turner, who composed music for many of his films, return to their shared experiences, inviting other musicians to join them in improvisation. In Warsaw, they will be joined by clarinettist, composer and improviser Wacław Zimpel. The project is overseen by James Mackay, producer of Jarman’s films and custodian of his archive.
The performance will be followed by a conversation in memory of Derek Jarman, with James Mackay, Tilda Swinton, Simon Fisher Turner and Wacław Zimpel.
The performances on 27 and 28 November 2026 will mark Tilda Swinton’s first encounter with a Warsaw audience. They are part of the accompanying programme to the exhibition Tilda Swinton – Ongoing, presented in Poland by Malta Festival, under the patronage of Dominika Kulczyk.
The performance is in English, with no translation.
The event is hosted by Kino Wisła. We would like to thank the British Council for its support in organising Tilda Swinton’s visit.
