Spodek – History of the Icon of Katowice
Spodek, a bold symbol of Katowice and one of the most recognizable buildings in Poland, was built over 50 years ago as a pioneering architectural structure. The design of the building was selected in 1959 in a competition organized by the Association of Polish Architects. The unique concept was created by architects Maciej Gintowt and Maciej Krasiński, while the construction was supervised by the outstanding engineer Wacław Zalewski, also known for his designs of the Katowice railway station and the Supersam department store in Warsaw. The location in the city center was chosen at the request of Jerzy Ziętek, the governor of Silesia, who wanted the hall to become a symbol of modernity and development in the region. Construction began in 1964 and lasted seven years. Thanks to the use of innovative technical solutions, such as a suspended roof structure, the facility became not only functional but also exceptionally aesthetic. The grand opening of Spodek took place on May 8, 1971, in the presence of 12,000 guests. On that day, the Katowice hall was filled with music by the band “Śląsk” and performances by Anna German and Ewa Decówna.
Spodek as a place of entertainment and sport
From the very beginning, Spodek became an arena for major entertainment and sporting events. The stage has hosted the biggest stars of world music, including Sting, Metallica, Tina Turner, Jean-Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode, Rammstein, and many others. Spodek has also become home to prestigious festivals such as Rawa Blues, Metalmania, and Mayday. Countless exciting sporting events have taken place in the stands of Spodek, such as the World and European Championships in volleyball, wrestling, bodybuilding, and ice hockey. A special event that went down in the history of the venue was the final of the Men's Volleyball World League in 2001, which attracted a record number of 50,000 fans during the competition.
The modern face of Spodek
After its modernization in 2016, Spodek gained a new lease on life, becoming a space adapted to contemporary needs. The facility is the arena for events such as Intel Extreme Masters, the largest e-sports event in Poland, attracting thousands of fans from around the world. Spodek also hosts the inaugurations of the European Economic Congress, as well as trade fairs and exhibitions, including the International Mining Fair, ProfiAuto Show, and Wedding Fair.
